Level 1: Introduction to Symbol Work and Sandplay Therapy

Introductory level – Open to any mental health and or health professional working with clients in a creative way or interested in creative therapies.

Sandplay therapy creates a bridge between the conscious and unconscious. Dora Kalff describes it as a “pathway to the psyche and in the hands of a properly prepared therapist, it is a powerful, invaluable modality”.

This two-day training opportunity is the beginning foundations of a creative expressive therapeutic modality.

Overview of the training

In this introductory training the origins of sand-tray and sandplay as a therapeutic modality and applications for across a wide range of populations will be introduced.
Training will include:
• Differentiation of sand-tray from Sandplay Therapy
• Common applications of sand-tray as a therapy modality
• Understanding various ways that symbol work and sand-tray can be used in assessment, therapy and supervision
• Use of sand-tray for reflective practice and in supervision
• Introduction to Jungian Concepts: Psyche
• Introduction to Jungian Sandplay therapy: sandplay room; collection of figurines; observation.

This two-day workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to engage in creating their own directed sand-trays. There is a maximum number of attendees in order to allow small experiential groups, and for all participants to create their own tray and the observers to practice reflective responses.

Webinar: Landscapes and Landforms

Considerations of what these natural features may reveal about the psyche as it appears in Jungian sandplay therapy

Description:

In this online webinar, STANZA Teaching Members Jean Parkinson (Auckland, NZ) and Carina Conradie (Hamilton, NZ) will explore the following:

  • What are the features of landscapes and landforms in general?
  • How does sandplay therapy invite the psyche to create landscapes and landforms?
  • Exploring the natural characteristics but mainly the symbolic associations that can be associated with these, by exploring specific landscapes and landforms.
  • Looking at sandplay case material to apply learning
  • Examine a detailed case study to consolidate learning and gain insights into the therapeutic process.

The webinar is suitable for Registered Psychotherapists,
Arts Therapists, Psychologists, Counsellors, and registered
mental health professionals with a background in clinical practice.

CPD Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the webinar participants will have:

  • Identified the difference between various landforms and landscapes for example a desert and a cave.
  • A deeper understanding of the symbolic associations of these natural features.
  • An awareness of how these features may present itself in sandplay therapy.
  • Examined a detailed case study to consolidate learning and gain insights into the therapeutic process.
