For the past fifteen years Jean Parkinson has offered four-level basic sandplay training in Auckland. These experiential workshops, differentiating Sandtray from Sandplay Therapy, are intended to promote awareness of the modality as a serious psychotherapy with strong psychological and developmental frameworks. They are not intended to take the place of training offered by ISST accredited teachers. Their value is in raising awareness, promoting professional reflection and interest in the responsible practice of Sandtray and Sandplay in Aotearoa.

Sandtray / Sandplay supervision is also offered for individuals and groups. There is also a STA Peer Reviewed Sandplay Journal discussion group.

Participants in these experiential courses need to be qualified Counsellors, Psychologists, Psychotherapists, Creative or Play Therapists.

Additional Training in Australia

There are regular opportunities to integrate prior learning and therapeutic work with ISST accredited teachers in Australia. Currently there is a comprehensive course facilitated by Heather Lesley-Swan, CST-T in Sydney. Currently the President of ISST is Alexander Esterhyzen, who is based in Hong Kong.

The first Australian Sandplay Conference, Transference and Countertransference in Sandplay Therapy Sand and Psyche, was held in Sydney in 2006. A Sand and Symbol Symposium was held in Melbourne in 2011. A four day Sandplay Intensive with Canadian ISST accredited teachers, Maria Iosue and Barbara Dalziel, was held in Melbourne, 2012.

Other training opportunities are based principally in Europe, Asia, United Kingdom, Japan and America. The Resources page on this website lists a number of the international Sandplay professional associations.
